This course lays the basis for understanding NMR spectroscopy (solution- and solid-state) and its application in structural biology and chemistry.
Topics:
Brief review of quantum-mechanical basis of nuclear magnetic resonance (spins, energy levels, transitions)
Spin interactions with its surrounding (couplings, chemical shift, paramagnetism)
Description of spin dynamics (vector model, product operators)
Pulse sequences
Processing and interpretation of NMR data in structural biology and chemistry
NMR instrumentation
Nuclear spin relaxation (basics; a more detailed treatment follows in a separate course)
Solid-state NMR (basics; a more detailed treatment follows in a separate course)
Demo sessions/practicals on the spectrometers.
(This is the first time this course is offered. Content and focus can be adapted, depending on the audience.)
