Organic Synthesis aims to strategically construct complex molecules with high selectivity and makes use of a vast toolbox of chemical reactions. In this course we will discuss selected, modern reactions that enable selective bond formations and functional group interconversions. We will put a focus on reactivity of the respective reagents/catalysts and reaction mechanisms to emphasize that many reactions fall into a small number of “classes” with common mechanistic blueprints or intermediates. As such, this course aims to help aquiring a predictable understanding of the way molecules behave – and how this reactivity can be harnessed for the synthesis of complex molecules.

Target group: Chemistry track students.

Prerequisites: Fundamental understanding of organic chemistry (at least BSc level knowledge in organic chemistry) is required.

Evaluation: Participation, homework (problem sets that will be discussed in the recitations).

Teaching format: Lectures (2x per week) + Recitation (1x week – “problem sets”)
