This advanced Adobe Illustrator workshop for scientists is designed to achieve two primary goals. First, it aims to acquaint participants with the fundamental principles of visual design, specifically tailored for creating scientific illustrations. Second, it seeks to equip scientists with the comprehensive skills needed to efficiently produce informative and appealing illustrations using Adobe Illustrator. By the end of the two afternoon sessions, participants will: - understand essential planning strategies - be familiar with elements and principles of art and design, gestalt principles, and color theory - master drawing and coloring techniques using Illustrator's pen and curvature tools and different types of brushes - master advanced techniques for creating intricate designs, including blending objects, creating patterns, working with perspective, symbols and meshes - participate in a collaborative brainstorming session, followed by dedicated project time, allowing participants to apply new skills to their own illustrations with ongoing guidance and feedback. About the trainer: Dr. Belen Pacheco-Fiallos is a biochemist with a passion for visual science communication. She has been using Adobe Illustrator for 10+ years to create figures for research papers and reviews, learning to efficiently craft multi-panel figures. She aims to share this knowledge with you with you so that you can focus on your next exciting experiment instead of manually changing colors!

Target group: This course is intended for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who have a basic understanding of Adobe Illustrator. The workshop “Scientific Visualization with Adobe Illustrator: From Basics to Publication-Ready Figures” is an ideal preparation.

Evaluation: Attendance and participation.

Teaching format: The workshop is conducted over two afternoon in-person sessions, combining live demonstrations with guided exercises. Homework serves as the basis for the second day of the workshop. Post-session resources include homework, a self-assessment quiz,
a compilation of advanced keyboard shortcuts, and a detailed guide for planning scientific illustrations.
